Services began January 15, 2004, with volunteer area dentists working with VCU dental and hygiene students two days per week. (For the two years previous, the Clinic had rented space at MCV for patients in critical need of oral surgery, and arranged for their transportation to Richmond.)
With a waiting list of 500, the overwhelming need was readily apparent.
Today, services are offered 3 ½ days per week out of a state-of-the-art facility.
A staff dentist, volunteer dentists and VCU students provide the services.
Twelve area dentists volunteer, as well as hygienists, assistants, and clerical personnel.
The $1 million mark in dental care was reached in a little over two years of part-time operations. Through 2009, more than $6.6 million in dental services have been provided.
Procedures are conducted on most Mondays and on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
