Services began January 15, 2004, with volunteer area dentists working with VCU dental and hygiene students two days per week. (For the two years previous, the Clinic had rented space at MCV for patients in critical need of oral surgery, and arranged for their transportation to Richmond.) With a waiting list of 500, the overwhelming need was readily apparent. Today, services are offered 3 ½ days per week out of a state-of-the-art facility. The $1 million mark in dental care was reached in a little over two years of part-time operations. Through 2010, more than $9.4 million in dental services have been provided.
Procedures are conducted on most Mondays and on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

PARTNERSHIPS
Services include: Oral exams • Amalgams • Root canals Through a partnership with the VCU School of Dentistry, dental and hygiene students rotate through three days per week, working with dentists from the area who volunteer their services. The arrangement allows for hands-on experience for the students, providing a learning lab along with the opportunity of seeing more patients in the six dental stations. The Dental Clinic also has worked with the Head Start Program, allowing children from low-income families to be educated on dental hygiene, screened, and scheduled for procedures as needed. Additionally, in working with the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic, qualified patients have been seen from that area, and dentists are recruited to volunteer.
